Nadella, Microsoft's new chief executive, is facing a challenge at Nokia: to persuade the company to change its course after a remarkable two years of upheaval under his predecessor, Stephen Elop.
On one hand, Elop is a former Microsoft employee and joined the company as a Senior VP after serving as an executive at Sun Microsystems. Elop's role may be to help Microsoft on a long-term vision, which would certainly be in line with Nadella's strategy of having Microsoft create products and services for the long term.
The photo's an obvious allegory for the state of Microsoft's under-fire two-horse race with the iPhone/Android duopoly, but it's also a play on the recent App Store snafu . When Elop was still in charge of the mobile division, the company failed to ship a set of mobile apps for the iPhone's launch, which was widely reported on at the time as a major blunder. Two years later, Elop has been replaced as CEO and the company's taken a different tack by trying to grow Microsoft's mobile presence, where the Surface is currently only available in the US.
The photo could prove one of Microsoft's more awkward photo shoots of the year. But if it's true, it would be a new low point for one of the company's most awkward and unhappy bosses in recent history.

Specifically, I do not intend to put my head down and work long hours for the next several weeks. I will, however, stay focused on the future of Nokia and our businesses and continue to think about the future of the entire Microsoft ecosystem.
