The QuadraSynth was introduced in 1993 by Alesis, and it wastheir first major synthesizer. It's a 64-voice, 76-key digitalsynthesizer that also came in a rack-mountable version: theS4 Sound Module. It had a whopping 16 MB of sample ROM,and was the first synth to offer the ADAT Optical Digital interface. Italso featured the same multi-effects processor as the QuadraVerb 2, drumkits based on the D4 drum module, 4 assignablecontrol knobs, one PCMCIA card slot, 48kHz clock input, and 4 audiooutputs.
As a keyboardist, I wanted to be able to use software instruments without having to manage a laptop/tablet, audio interface, etc. Basically, I needed a compact, simple sound module that I could customize and use with my favorite MIDI controller - specifically an Alesis Vortex keytar.
I find myself constantly tweaking the sound of my patches with little to no effort. Creating patches is easy for me, especially if you grab the latest FluidSynth source and build from source. From there, you can download the patched binaries from my synth's site. The D4 synth is midi-only, and has a 16-bit stereo analog output. This is shown in the image. 7211a4ac4a
